Bilal Combined School
Corner Wimbledon & Wellington Streets LENASIA SOUTH
Partnership date: 19 March 2013
School Roll Updated 2019: 612

Bilal started as a small independent primary school catering to the community of Lenasia South and surrounds. While it is a private school, the fees collected are nominal and the school is hugely dependent on the government subsidy and private donations. We received a request from the previous acting Director of Johannesburg South District to assist the school in establishing a resource centre; the proposal document was received, and approved by the trustees. This paved the way for an upgrade which process included:

  • Painting of a large classroom
  • Re-tiling floors and re-carpeting specially created reading spaces
  • Shelving and furniture
  • 7000 books
  • Teaching aids
  • Computers and IT equipment with downloaded lesson plans, and the
  • Introduction of the reading acceleration programme

The school – which has since grown to include high school classes – has been renamed Bilal Combined School. Books to cater for high school learners have been added to the book store. The school continues to be a beacon of hope for the community who can ill afford high priced private education.
