As an area, Eldorado Park in the south of Johannesburg had not appeared on our radar even though its schools cater to mostly impoverished learners from the neighbouring areas of Kliptown, Freedom Park and Soweto.
When the opportunity arose to assist Cavendish Primary, the Trust declared an immediate interest as it was an unquestionable aim to spread the literacy initiative as widely as possible.
Cavendish is the biggest library in our portfolio, because two large classrooms and two smaller storerooms were made available and converted to establish this facility. Three months after identifying the school, the community became the proud owner of a larger-than-average Centre.
The library is not only popular with learners; many curriculum development workshops for teachers from surrounding schools take place regularly in the library.
With such enthusiasm, the Trust was keen to look at a few more schools in this area.
