The proposal from MCK Special School was accepted, albeit reluctantly, because of a fear from the trustees that that we were not equipped to deal with the demands of school for the hearing-impaired. However, once embedded into the school and its particular needs, it was like working at any other school. The enthusiasm of the principal and teaching staff, and the encouraging attitude of own staff who started learning South African Sign Language, put paid to all initial fears.

The resource centre was renovated to the same standards as our other libraries. The resources included special books written for hearing impaired children. Teaching aids included puppets which were key to comprehension development in children with special needs.

The library at MCK continues to serve as a centre where teachers bring in small groups of learners to be helped by the library assistant because many require one-on-one assistance.

A tear-jerker for the trustees, guests and officials at the official handover was the performance of the national anthem by the school choir – all hearing-impaired – in sign language.
