District D8 of the Gauteng Department of Education, is the home of Fukama Primary School. The district director and officials are very supportive and hands-on. The school has a negligible attrition rate in teachers and learners as most of the children live in formal low-cost houses and not informal dwellings and shacks.
The commitment by teachers who live in areas similar to their learners was immediately noticeable. In a number of instances, the teachers at the school opt to keep their own children with them. This was a refreshing difference.
The principal manages two sites that had been combined to form one school. The school is now home to a larger number of learners compared to other schools in the area. The one conspicuous difference is that it is always neat and orderly and learning and teaching takes place diligently even though the supply water and electricity is a daily challenge in the area.
The school vacated their feeding room which we attached to a classroom to establish a stunning library resource center which was gifted to the community on 9 May 2018.
