Hyundai notified the Trust that they would be interested in sponsoring another library. The Trust had no hesitation in recommending Phehello Primary School, as it had already been identified as a suitable candidate to receive a new library.
There were enormous challenges experienced during the renovation process – all unexpected. Leaks were detected in the roof and foundation and rising damp was noticeable in the walls. What followed was the proverbial blood, sweat and tears (much tears) of doubt and sleepless nights.
As with all other projects, the construction team worked 18-hour shifts to complete the reconstruction phase in time for handover in September 2017 as a Literacy Month initiative. This was Hyundai library number five, and its grand opening had to align to the schedule of its board of directors.
Mercifully this was accomplished within a gasp, and Hyundai was suitably impressed and inspired that their donation was yet again put to such good use.
The school continues to feature prominently at our in-house inter-school activities; it would be a simplification to say the joy of reading at Phehello is being realised one book at a time.
